Super Bowl XLIV is nearly here. It’s the biggest sports betting day of the year and the one that draws the biggest TV audiences in the USA. The media and the pre-game ‘machine’ have already started up and the hype just builds until the 7 Feb.
It’s an interesting game this year because for the first time in seventeen years the number one teams in the AFC and NFC will fight it out for the biggest prize in US team sports.
Current Odds: Spreads +5.5 Saints -110. -5.5 Colts -110
Total Points: 56 – 57 range.
The Indianapolis Colts
The Colts have not been prolific scorers of late. The Saints on the other hand have racked up some numbers during the playoffs.
Indianapolis ended the regular season with the finest track record in the league at 14-2. But if it wasn’t for the fact that Indianapolis put out a weakened side for their last two regular season games, to save the first string for the playoffs, they might have gone undefeated for the season. Perhaps it is therefore a bit of a revelation to see the spread moving in support of Colts backers from -6.5 to -5.5. The strategic point spreads of 3.0 and 7.0 don’t enter into matters in this Super Bowl but we’ll all take less on the negative when we can get it!
The Colts bring to the table one of the best passing offenses in the league, that will be run by Peyton Manning. The Colts defense on the other hand has not been as reliable. The Colts have faded from around tenth in the league to fifteenth – hardly impressive. This has been enough of a crisis to force Manning to engineer a number of comeback wins. As a consequence of this the Colts have had to come from behind to win a number of times.
The New Orleans Saints
This is the first Super Bowl final in New Orleans Saints’ history.
New Orleans was similarly on track for an undefeated season, but the Dallas Cowboys put an end to that in Week 15. The Saints proceeded to lose their last two games to end the regular season at 13-3.
The Saints aren’t without a talent or two themselves. Drew Brees made thirty-four touchdown passes this season and his passer rating betters that of Manning. New Orleans also have the top rushing team – so in no way can they be thought of as one-dimensional.
Defense has got Super Bowl Betting Tips as well but they are, notwithstanding, ordinary and probably match the Colts in this area.
It seems the Colts have constantly managed to ‘do enough’ to get through games this season. The Saints are a bit of an unknown measure and they nearly blew it against the Vikings who had a inferior away record.
On the spreads, I would probably have taken the Saints at +6.5 but at -5.5 I might favor the Colts. Force me to pick and it would be the Colts at -5.5. I may wait and see how the line moves between now and Sunday.
